Nonequilibrium thermodynamics of dilute polymer solutions in flow.

چکیده
Modern materials processing applications and technologies often occur far from equilibrium. To this end, the processing of complex materials such as polymer melts and nanocomposites generally occurs under strong deformations and flows, conditions under which equilibrium thermodynamics does not apply. As a result, the ability to determine the nonequilibrium thermodynamic properties of polymeric materials from measurable quantities such as heat and work is a major challenge in the field. Here, we use work relations to show that nonequilibrium thermodynamic quantities such as free energy and entropy can be determined for dilute polymer solutions in flow. In this way, we determine the thermodynamic properties of DNA molecules in strong flows using a combination of simulations, kinetic theory, and single molecule experiments. We show that it is possible to calculate polymer relaxation timescales purely from polymer stretching dynamics in flow. We further observe a thermodynamic equivalence between nonequilibrium and equilibrium steady-states for polymeric systems. In this way, our results provide an improved understanding of the energetics of flowing polymer solutions.

Legendre transform in the thermodynamics of flowing polymer solutions.
We propose a Legendre transform linking two different choices of nonequilibrium variables (viscous pressure tensor and configuration tensor) in the thermodynamics of flowing polymer solutions. This may avoid some current confusions in the analysis of thermodynamic effects in polymer solutions under flow.
متن کاملStructure and dynamics of dilute polymer solutions under shear flow via nonequilibrium molecular dynamics
We present and discuss data obtained by an extensive nonequilibrium molecular dynamics computer simulation study of polymer solutions under shear, where the chain consists of N beads connected by a finitely extendable nonlinear elastic (FENE) spring force and the solvent is explicitly taken into account. Various scaling laws are extracted from the data which allow one to predict the qualitative...
متن کاملSimple Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics Applications to Polymer Rheology (As it appeared on: RHEOLOGY REVIEWS 2003, The British Society of Rheology (publisher), 37-75)
We review here recent developments in nonequilibrium thermodynamics and their applications to rheology. In particular we review the application of the dissipative Hamiltonian formalism to incompressible, homogeneous and isothermal flows of flexible polymer systems. We show not only the advantages that have been brought up by the nonequilibrium thermodynamics approach but also exactly where the ...
متن کاملSchrödinger link between nonequilibrium thermodynamics and Fisher information.
It is known that equilibrium thermodynamics can be deduced from a constrained Fisher information extemizing process. We show here that, more generally, both nonequilibrium and equilibrium thermodynamics can be obtained from such a Fisher treatment. Equilibrium thermodynamics corresponds to the ground-state solution, and nonequilibrium thermodynamics corresponds to excited-state solutions, of a ...
متن کاملDynamic mean-field models from a nonequilibrium thermodynamics perspective.
Complicated dynamic models are often approximated by introducing mean-field approximations and closures. The focus here is on examining such mean-field models using nonequilibrium thermodynamics. Two illustrative examples are studied in terms of the double-generator general equation for the nonequilibrium reversible-irreversible coupling (GENERIC) framework. First, it is shown that a model for ...
